To list all the fathers in the Bible would make this post eternal.

There are many fathers in the Bible but we don’t know much about their lives as fathers.

So, here I have listed fathers about whom there is enough details in Scripture to do a meaningful study.

Scroll to the end for a handy printable with Scripture references for each father.

These references are limited just to give you a good starting point for your study.

Also, this list has been categorized but these characters could easily fit into multiple categories.

Ask the Holy Spirit to show you the lessons from each of their lives.

Famous fathers of the Bible

The great fathers in Scripture are often called the patriarchs.

Though far from perfect, the story of these men form the foundation of our faith. They introduce us to God, the Father of all fathers, and His perfect love for us.

Here goes the list:-

God – father to Adam, the Israelites, Jesus and all humans ( Exodus 4:22-23, Luke 3:38, John 3:16, Matthew 23:9, 1 Corinthians 8:6, 1 John 3:1-2, James 1:17, Ephesians 3:14-15)

Adam – father to Cain, Abel, Seth, unnamed sons and daughters, and all people (Genesis 2:21-22, Genesis 3:20, 5:4)

Noah – father to Shem, Ham, Japheth (Genesis 5:32, 9:18)

Abraham – father to Ishmael, Isaac, Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah (Genesis 16:1-4, 15-16; 21:1-7; Genesis 25:1, 6)

Isaac – father to Jacob and Esau (Genesis 25:21-28)

Jacob – father to 12 sons: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Gad, Asher, Dan, Naphtali, Joseph and Benjamin and one daughter, Dinah (Genesis 35:23-26, 30:1)

Good (but imperfect) fathers of the Bible

Only God is the perfect father. Bible characters give us a glimpse of our heavenly father.

In their imperfection we learn the do’s and don’ts of fatherhood.

Of course, the human father’s in the previous list fit easily into this category too.

As you study the fatherhood of these men, take the good and ask God to help you minimize the bad.
